Toddler Program (15 months - 2.9 years)
Our Toddler Program: Where Wonder Begins
At Stony Brook School, we view our toddler classrooms as an invitation to wonder, a space where we listen deeply to the theories children are forming about the world, and where learning is built through close, meaningful relationships. Inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, we honor the toddler as a capable, curious protagonist of their own learning. We treat the environment as our 'third teacher,' curating a warm, home-like space filled with natural textures and open-ended provocations that invite children to explore, hypothesize, and create.
Learning happens organically in our classrooms, emerging from the conversations, shared inquiries, and deep connections that define our daily life together. Our educators do not simply transmit knowledge; they walk alongside the children as researchers and partners, honoring their unique pace and their theories about the world. We weave physical, social, emotional, and cognitive growth into every day, transforming routines into playful, complex inquiries. Our rhythm is guided not by rigid expectations, but by the questions, curiosity, and evolving relationships of the children in our care.
How We Support Your Toddler’s Learning Journey
Social-Emotional Connection: We believe learning is only possible in environments where children feel safe, seen, and valued. Through reciprocal, collaborative play, we nurture the trust and empathy that form the foundation for lasting relationships with peers and adults.
Growing Independence: We honor the child’s fundamental right to agency. By engaging with authentic routines and daily tasks, toddlers find the space to make their own choices, building the confidence to navigate their world with autonomy and pride.
Creative Expression: We value play as a serious, complex language. Through sensory-rich exploration and art, we provide the time and space for children to use their "hundred languages" to express their thoughts, feelings, and observations.
Motor Skills Development: We view movement as an essential tool for inquiry. From navigating the landscape of our outdoor classroom to the focus required for stacking and building, we encourage physical exploration that supports coordination, confidence, and a growing understanding of the body in space.
Cognitive Discovery: We cultivate a natural love for the "why" and "how." Through puzzles, games, and persistent exploration, toddlers engage in the serious work of discovering cause-and-effect relationships and sharpening their early problem-solving skills.
Communication & Literacy: We practice a pedagogy of listening. We view communication as shared and responsive exchange; through rich storytelling, music, and attentive dialogue, we support toddlers as they expand their vocabulary to articulate their needs, ideas, and theories about the world around them.
